MiG Design Bureau is an Orussian manufacturing company that is keen on the research and development of high-altitude fighter units. The MiG60, their first completed unit, was a high-altitude high-speed unit. This airframe performed reasonably well, and several variants were built, but the military requested a unit capable of flying at higher speeds and higher altitudes in order to counter the increasingly powerful Neuroi. When the production of the engine used in the MiG60 was stopped, the liquid-cooled engine was replaced by a more powerful air-cooled engine, but it was an aerodynamically sloppy design, and it never made it past the prototype stage. Therefore, MiG Design Bureau drastically revised the design of the fuselage itself and started to develop the more aerodynamically sophisticated i-220 series.
When the first i-220 prototype was built the AM-39 high-altitude engine was not completed yet, so the AM-38F, a medium-altitude engine which was also installed in the IL-2A, was used for the tests. The test flights proved that it had good maneuverability and handling, and a favorable judgment was given to the airframe. The completion of the new engine was highly awaited. With the completion of the AM-39, the engine was replaced and the unit was tested at the expected high-altitude. The results of this test revealed that the wing area needed to be increased for high-altitudes, and improved versions, such as the 221 and 222, were created. However, although these airframes had excellent performance, the AM-39 engine was not performing well and its mass production was cancelled, and neither of these units were officially adopted.
Therefore, the i-225, a new prototype using the AM-42B, was made. The AM-42B is an enhanced version of the AM-38F with increased output, resulting in better high-altitude performance. The prototype No. 2, fitted with this engine, and the prototype No. 3, fitted with an AM-42 designed for medium-altitude, were sent to Petersburg for actual combat testing. The third prototype was tested by Flight Lieutenant Pokryshkin. Both of these units achieved good results, and it was decided to proceed with mass production after correcting the flaws that were reported during the tests. In addition, the "i" of i-225 means that it is a fighter unit. After its official adoption, it was named MiG-225.
Trivia[]
